So What is Metagenomics?

Metagenomics is the study of genomes and microorganisms. The hope of metagenomics is to research on these microorganisms to find out if they can be useful to humans, and to learn more about their environment. (1)

What are the benefits of Metagenomics?

The benefits of metagenomics is that it helps humans understand that some bacteria are actually beneficial to our health.  Research has shown that microbes can perform functions such as extracting nutrients and calories from indigestible components of our diets.  Microbes are also helpful in which they make essential vitamins and amino acids.  Some bacteria can also help in detoxifying harmful chemicals in what we eat; and while living in and on our bodies they defend us against harmful pathogens as well. This relationship between humans and microbes helps us both by protecting us from diseases while giving microbes a place to live. (2)

Why do we use it?

We use metagenomics to find an understanding that microbes may contain useful genes that can help the human population.  We use it because we want to find out whether or not there is a plus side to the microbes we come in contact with in our everyday lives.  We are doing this to see if we can come upon a solution that will help benefit us humans in our health and many other possible aspects.
